Policy change regarding availability of the MELAB Speaking Test effective 30 June 2000
The English Language Institute of the University of Michigan announces a change in policy regarding where the optional MELAB Speaking Test (oral interview) will be available. As of 30 June 2000, this optional component of the MELAB will be administered only in the United States and Canada. There is no change to our policy of where Parts 1, 2, and 3 of the MELAB (the composition, listening, and grammar/cloze/vocabulary/reading sections) will be available.
The following paragraphs summarize the availability of the MELAB as of 30 June 2000. They outline where the MELAB is available, what parts of the MELAB are available at those locations, and what type(s) of administrations are available at those locations.
In the US and Canada
MELAB Parts 1, 2, and 3 are administered in the US and Canada as an individually-arranged test or as a group test. At these locations, test candidates may also, for an additional fee, choose to take the optional MELAB Speaking Test (oral interview). All parts of the MELAB are administered by local examiners authorized by the ELI-UM.
Outside the US and Canada
There is very limited availability of the MELAB outside the US and Canada. Outside the US and Canada, only Parts 1, 2, and 3 of the MELAB are available; the optional MELAB Speaking Test (oral interview) is not available. Examinees outside the US and Canada may take MELAB Parts 1, 2, and 3 only as members of a sponsored group test arranged by the ELI-UM. These tests are arranged only where the ELI-UM has identified a qualified local examiner and where offering the test complies with local and US law.
